Fashions change, trends emerge and are quickly forgotten, but the tradition of diamond engagement rings is unlikely to change for a few generations yet.

That is if you are one of the approximately 75% of British males who buy their betrothed a diamond ring.

Not only is a substantial amount of money about to change hands, but the ring itself is a symbol of the most permanent relationship of your life.

So leaving aside for moment the technical details, cut, colour, carat and clarity, (and lets not forget the rather important ‘c’ of cost!) how do you know she will like it?

One aspect of considering the vast array of diamond engagement rings that some men in their impetuousness forget is their prospective partner’s tastes.

Does she like contemporary pieces or is her jewelry box full of family heirlooms, hand-me-downs and vintage items.

White gold? Platinum? Single or multi stone?  A surprise proposal is one thing, but  a lack of research with a ring is something you want to avoid.

So apart from observing her responses to engagement rings on other people or in fashion magazines, the best guidance you can get is from her friends or female relatives.

76% of engagement rings sold in Britain are the ‘solitaire ‘style, but there are many ways to present them.

Basket style or other low setting? Set high on a prong? There are a number of choices you want sorted before the buying process starts.

After all, like many important presentations first impressions go a long way to help make a smooth journey.
